Standards of Practice

Standards Introduction

The CENTER for SPIRITUAL CARE and PASTORAL FORMATION (CSCPF) offers educational programs in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), Integrative Spiritual Care Education (ISCE), Pastoral Psychotherapy, Supervisor Education Fellow (SEF) and Clinical Specialist Fellow. These programs are under the governance of CSCPF.

Respect for the learner's personal and professional growth is central to all CSCPF educational programs and the CSCPF mission. These standards are designed to provide guidance to Clinical Supervisors, Learning Centers and to all those who seek certification with CSCPF.  The standards are also designed to establish and uphold professional competencies and ethical behavior. The standards assure sufficient consistency in practice and application to insure the quality and effectiveness of CSCPF certified individuals.

It is understood that the standards will not address all possible situations involving individuals and their educational process. In cases where the standards fail to address specific circumstances, the CSCPF Program Council and Practitioner Communities will prevail.  Standards are to be reviewed with sensitivity annually or as requested in order to address critical issues or specific development.

Common Certification Standards

CSCPF offers certification to qualified individuals in the following areas:

There are common certification standards that apply to all CSCPF certification categories and standards that are unique to each specific certification. Some of the requirements are objective and other requirements are a matter of subjective judgment regarding a candidate's level of functioning. In general, it should be clearly understood that
(1) the certification process always emphasizes a candidate's ability to demonstrate the kind of profound personal and professional competence essential for clinical work in interpersonal relationships;
(2) the completion of formal requirements is always seen in relation to such a demonstrated ability to function; and
(3) certification is always a matter of judgment of one's professional peers who are delegated representatives of CSCPF.
